The Partnership on AI is pleased to announce the addition of two Directors to its board, Jerremy Holland (Apple) and Joaquin Quiñonero Candela (Facebook).

The Partnership on AI Board of Directors is comprised of an equal number of directors representing for-profit and not-for-profit interests. Its founding for-profit Partners – Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google/DeepMind, IBM, and Microsoft – are all represented by individuals with term-limited appointments on behalf of their institutions.

Today, we are thrilled to announce the addition of two new Directors to PAI’s board, representing Apple and Facebook – and give our thanks to Tom Gruber and Yann LeCun for their dedication, their vision, and their service in the formative months and years of PAI’s founding.

Jerremy Holland replaces Tom Gruber as Apple’s PAI board representative.

Jerremy is the Director of AI Research at Apple, where he leads the AI Research Group that engages in research of artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to autonomous systems, natural interaction, algorithms, tools, health, and wellness as part of Apple’s AI/ML organization. Earlier in his career at Apple, Jerremy led the Media Science Group where computer vision and machine intelligence were applied to camera and photo algorithms such as face detection & recognition, scene analysis, image auto-enhancement, and smart image adjustment.

Prior to joining Apple, Jerremy worked as group manager in Pixar’s Studio Tools team, and as a Research Scientist and Department Manager at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. Jerremy has architected large solutions including telecommunication fraud management solutions for HP, and robotics and automation control solutions for Mountain Computer. He is listed as an inventor or co-inventor on 19 issued U.S. Patents, and numerous patent applications.

Jerremy holds a Bachelor of Computer Engineering degree from University of California, Santa Cruz. He is a member of the Organizing Committee for BayLearn, an annual machine learning symposium held in the San Francisco Bay Area.

“Machine learning and AI should augment human abilities, enabling incredible new experiences while protecting the privacy of users’ personal information,” Jerremy said. “I am thrilled to join the board of the Partnership on AI to help fulfill the vision of achieving both of these aims.”

Joaquin Quiñonero Candela replaces Yann LeCun as Facebook’s PAI board representative.

Joaquin is a Director of Engineering in AI at Facebook. He built the AML (Applied Machine Learning) team, driving product impact at scale through applied research in machine learning, language understanding, computer vision, computational photography, augmented reality, and other AI disciplines. AML also built the unified AI platform that powers all production applications of AI across the family of Facebook products. Joaquin is now focused on new AI challenges, including the ethics of AI.

Prior to this, Joaquin built and taught a new machine learning course at the University of Cambridge, worked at Microsoft Research, and conducted postdoctoral research at three institutions in Germany, including the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics. He received his PhD from the Technical University of Denmark.

On joining the Partnership on AI Board on behalf of Facebook, Joaquin said: “AI is arguably the most transformative technology in the world right now. More than just a science, economists call it a general-purpose technology. AI is transforming industries like healthcare, transportation, farming, and education, and others by helping solve incredibly complex problems at scale. As our dependency on AI increases, it becomes necessary to deeply understand the risks and societal consequences, for example of relying on AI for consequential decisions by a judge, a doctor or a recruiter. Making sure AI is used responsibly and for the benefit of all requires an extraordinary collaboration of the magnitude brought by the Partnership on AI. We are honored to be a part of this journey.”

About PAI
The Partnership on AI to Benefit People and Society was established to study and formulate best practices on AI technologies, to advance the public’s understanding of AI, and to serve as an open platform for discussion and engagement about AI and its influences on people and society. Our members believe in and endeavor to uphold a group of tenets that characterize and drive all of the Partnership’s work. These include the belief that AI research and development efforts need to be actively engaged with and accountable to a broad range of stakeholders, and a commitment to maximizing the benefits and addressing the potential challenges of AI technologies by working to protect the privacy and security of individuals.
